What we do...

The Green Bag Project (GBP) aims to bring critical attention to the way our everyday habits impact upon the environment. To do this, we empower individuals to engage and educate their community about their impact on the environment, employing a reusable shopping tote as a catalyst for change.  We are a registered 501 (c)(4) in the US, and a Community Interest Company (CIC) in the UK.

We provide a toolkit and support for individuals and groups to start Community Bag Projects in their local towns and schools. These projects unite and engage communities. Local businesses pay for reusable shopping bags that are embroidered with the townÕs logo and message (usually done by a local artist). The bags are then given out by local social and environmental groups along with a pledge to no longer use non-reusable paper and plastic.

The Green bag Project provides community blogs and environmental calendars for each project along with a user-led, social networking framework to unite the projects and build an international movement.

We also offer a toolkit and support for a bag project in schools that empowers older students to educate and engage their peers about the environment, providing a similar bag to the students to bring home to their parents. For more information see the Community and Schools section of our website.

The Green Bag Project was created in 2007 by Dane Pflueger and Frana Sadler.

Dane Pflueger 23, is a Vassar College and London School of Economics (MPA) graduate. He spent several years in the mental health and criminal justice field before starting the Green Bag Project. He is a native Southern Californian with a deep connection to the ocean and the environment.

Frana Sadler is a University of Texas graduate and mother of three. Based in Austin Texas, her family runs a number of environmental projects including a sustainable ranch, solar energy company, and environmental real estate firm.

While Dane and Frana  got the movement going, its individuals across the world that make the project possible. You can view the profiles of individuals who started bag projects by clicking on their community blog page.

Why we do it...

The world uses over one million bags per second. These bags take enormous amount of energy and non-renewable resources to create, take thousands of years to break down, are seldom recycled (between 3 and 12 %), wreak havoc on our oceans and rivers, and pollute our cities and landscapes.

Yet the average plastic bag is used for just seven minutes!

There is a startling contradiction between the way we act and We believe that the only way to save our planet is by getting people to change their habits. We think everyone legitimately wants to do the right thing but often we are simply not aware of the impact that our actions have on the environment and we lack the support of others to change our bad habits.

The Green bag Project aims to bring critical attention to the way our everyday habits affect the environment. We do this by mobilizing the community to educate individuals and work together to better, more sustainable solutions for the future. Because people often find the issue of the environment too big or daunting to approach, we focus on individuals and communities as the focal point for change.
